History

Rohtas Forest has an old and interesting history ranging from prehistoric days of aboriginal abode, Buddha era , Magadha empire, Mughal rule till India’s Independence. Series of old legends, historical events, architecture, inscription, megaliths, rock shelter caves, rock paintings, forts etc are the finest example of rich history that is safely preserved in Rohtas serene forest.

Historical forts

On one hand, there is the Rohtasgarh fort is a stronghold on the summit of a lofty mountain, difficult to access, believed to be invincible, could not be taken by force but only by means of deceit.  On the other hand, the Shergarh fort, a forgotten Hill fort, still is a mystery to historian and yet to be fully explored. Both forts are a sheet of nature hills, and history and also most popular historical attraction.

Kaimur Range

With deep jungles interspersed with gorges, several caves and beautiful waterfalls, containing randomly dispersed antiquarian remains, the Hills which are one of the oldest rock formations along with the Aravallis in the Indian sub-continent, mainly consist of old igneous rocks, retain their unique air of mystery.

Rohtas district consists two natural areas – plain and Kaimur range which is the eastern portion of the Vindhya Range The most important physiographic features are the great Kaimur escarpment, deep gorges, waterfalls, hilly views, tableland top. The region is well bestowed with leopard, sloth bear, chausingha, barking deer, reptiles. The habitat also attracts visiting Tigers from nearby forest areas. The sanctuary forms an important corridor between forest areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh ensuring contiguity of forests in Vindhya.
